Checkin In

Hey guys…..checking in with some pics taken on recent travels.

First one is in Tahiti, using my KP gear to hold on to the dingy so we can get out to the reef pass!

Second one is in EL Salvador, in a little town east of the country, with some locals girlies!

In Moorea, swimming with the rays….I guess I don’t surf that much anymore…hahahha!

Here’s some surfing

How I broke my collar bone…

Broke my collar bone about a month ago, September 2nd to be exact. My dad and I saw a swell going to Tahiti so we decided to go there for a week since home was flat as a lake!!! So I got there and decided to go tow surf one Tuesday afternoon. I was getting towed by my friend Poto for a little bit more then an hour. Waves were like 8 to 12 feet, I had already got a couple, then I got some bigger ones like 15 footers that came in and got spit out was super stoked already. Also had gotten tossed on the reef couple times already, then I was in the outside holding the rope waiting for one more wave ready to go in already. Then a wave came and I could tell it was a set but couldn’t tell how big it really was yet, I let go of the rope early cause I wanted to be deep, then the thing started sucking up bellow sea level really big and thick!!! I realized this thing was starting to bend in front of me really big!!! and I was too deep, so I started pumping, then the thing threw out really really wide!!! It was like I was in that video game Transworld surf in slow motion. Then I was almost out of this thing when the foam ball hit me and I held it for like a second then It hit me again and it threw me up flying flips inside the barrel, Then I got sucked up and smashed into the reef shoulder first then backfiring with the side of my head!!! My focus was to not pass out under water, once it let me go I popped up and there was a wave breaking right in front of me so I got hit by that one also. Finally I popped up and Poto was right there picking me up on the jet ski. I could tell my collar bone was broken from when I hit the shoulder so we went back to the harbor. I was bummed on getting hurt, But stoked on the wave was so sick!!!! I went to Brazil to get surgery, put a titanium plate on my collar bone to align it back together and am now waiting for the bone to glue together. Been out of the water for a little bit more then 1 month, and am looking at about 1 more month of waiting for the bone to glue back together. Unfortunately there was no one else there to take footage or photos of the waves to show you guys, Im stoked though its all in my brain, Freaking out and Amping now to get back in the water!!!! Im just gonna have to wait out the torture… but its all good life is good!!!

Peace!!!

Slater Wins Boost Mobile Pro

Slater Wins Hard-Fought Battle Over Burrow for Boost Mobile Pro Title

SAN CLEMENTE, California (Thursday, September 11, 2008)

Kelly Slater (USA), 36, defeated Taj Burrow (AUS), 30, 18.97 to 18.63 to win an unprecedented third Boost Mobile Pro title at Lower Trestles today, and a staggering fifth win on the 2008 ASP World Tour.

Burrow blitzed early and with a 9.00 and 9.63 in his scoreline before the halfway mark, had Slater looking for a combination of excellent scoring waves to contend. In sheer Slater fashion, the eight-time ASP World Champion fought his way back to claim victory - his fifth of the season.

“I was literally out there just trying to save face, I thought Taj had me ” he was on fire,” Slater said. “I was just trying to get out of combo and put on a good show for everybody. I got a 9.7 on a smaller wave that had a clean face and let me get a lot of speed and some big carves and that let me get back in.?

Even with the 9.7, Slater was still searching for an 8.93. Burrow gave Slater a very average looking wave with less than two minutes to go ” a mistake that cost him the win and a healthy prize purse. Hurley, the presenting sponsor of the event, threw an additional US$45,000 on top of the standard US$30,000 first place prize purse - the winner of the Boost Mobile Pro presented by Hurley took home US$75,000 today.

“Taj had priority and he let that wave go because it was the first wave and he probably thought it was going to be bumpy but it let me do a lot on it,” Slater said. “It was a really good wave, but it was the first wave of the set.”

To add insult to Burrow’s injury, the final was five minutes longer than the standard ASP final which is usually 35-minutes in duration. Slater talked Burrow and the contest director into lengthening the heat before they paddled out and that was the difference today.

“We went over and talked to Snips (contest director Mike Parsons) before the heat,” Slater said. “Taj wanted to do a 35-minute heat and I said, Why don’t we do a 40 minute final, we’ve got all the time in the world this afternoon.
